Self-Employed Mantra

Anyone that has ever been self-employed knows, it’s not always easy. It’s not easy being a good boss and it is especially not easy being a good boss to yourself.

Here is the Self-Employed Mantra

** Keep you word. Call when you said you would call. Complete the job on time. Promise and deliver.
** Provide Benefits. Get health insurance, regular savings and retirement savings plans.
** Pay Less Taxes. Do whatever you can to deduct EVERYTHING within legal limits. Get a great book-keeper and accountant.
** Get Help. If you don’t have an assistant, you are the assistant.
** Keep In Touch. Creating a system of keeping in touch with your customers is the most effortless and most effective way of marketing your products or services.
** Empty Space. Have the time and space in your schedule where you get to create with absolutely no interruptions – no cell phone, no computer, no books, no people – just you and an empty piece of paper (OK – pens are allowed).
** Dream BIG. If you are working for yourself and you have no ceiling, you might as well be reaching for the stars.

Love Your Customer

One of the business disconnects I notice in a lot of my clients is that they don’t love their customers. Sometimes, they don’t even like their customers.

Seth Godin’s post reminded of this.

  • What can you do shift your business so that you love your clients more?
  • What can you do to shift yourself so that you love your clients more?

A Goorin Hat

There’s nothing like a great hat. I almost never leave home without one. I think it’s a perfect accessory to any outfit. I probably own over a hundred of ’em.

  • Would I not be the perfect customer for a hat manufacturer or a hat shop?
  • Is there a more perfect client than someone who is passionate about what you do?

I stumbled upon a perfect hat shop in the Northbeach district of San Francisco, Goorin Hat Shop. I was in heaven. I tried on everything. Spoke at length to a clerk. I really felt like I was a kid in candy store. I bought 2 hats. This one is my favorite.

Goorin Hat

I have worn it numerous times in the week since I’ve bought it. I got lots of compliments and told at least a dozen people about the hat shop. And I’ll be back to the shop A LOT.

  • What if your entire marketing strategy was geared towards your ideal client?
  • What if you then empowered this client to spread the word?

Business Catalyst

When we change how we look at our business, our business changes.

  • How can the act of looking at your business be a catalyst for growth?
